Two long weekends sit back to back. A parcel which misses the last dispatch before Christmas may not move until 29 December, and a parcel which misses 31 December may wait until 4 January.

Why ordering 10 days ahead works

A private Mounjaro order goes through several steps before it reaches you. A prescriber reviews your answers and, for a first order or a dose change, checks your weight and identity. GPhC guidance requires the prescriber to verify your weight, height or BMI independently for weight loss medicines. Then the pharmacy dispenses and packs the pen for cold delivery, and a courier collects it.

In a normal week this takes a few working days. Around Christmas, each step can slip by a day or two, and the last dispatch date for chilled next-day parcels comes before Christmas Eve. Order earlier still if:

this is your first order with a pharmacy
you are moving up a dose, which needs a prescriber review
you live in a remote area or on an island where next-day delivery is slower
your pen runs out between 23 December and 4 January

Count your doses now

Each KwikPen holds 4 weekly doses and must be thrown away 30 days after first use. Write down the date of your first injection from your current pen. Count forward to the fourth dose. If the fourth dose falls in the week before Christmas, your next pen needs to arrive by your following injection day, which may land on a bank holiday.

A spare pen in the fridge

Some prescribers approve two pens at the same dose for the holiday period. If yours does:

Keep the unstarted pen in the fridge at 2C to 8C until you start it. The leaflet gives no out-of-fridge allowance before first use.
Store it on a middle shelf, away from the back wall where food can freeze.
Keep it in its box, and make sure nobody moves it into a cool box with ice for a party.
Check the expiry date when it arrives.

Christmas fridges are crowded. Pens get pushed to the back next to the cooling plate, or taken out to make room for a turkey and forgotten on the side. Pick a fixed spot and tell your household.

A spare pen does not change the 30-day rule. Once you start a pen, it goes 30 days after first use, whatever is left in it.

If a dose is due on a bank holiday

Mounjaro does not need to be taken on a working day. If the pen is in your fridge, inject on your usual day, Christmas Day included. If the pen has not arrived, you have two rules to work with.

The missed dose rule comes from the SmPC and the NHS. If 4 days or less have passed since the dose was due, inject as soon as you can, then go back to your usual day. If more than 4 days have passed, skip the dose and take the next one on your usual day. Do not give 2 injections to make up for a missed one.

The SmPC also lets you change your injection day, as long as at least 3 days (72 hours) separate two doses. Carry on weekly from the new day.

Worked example

Your usual day is Friday, so your dose is due on Friday 25 December. Your last dose was Friday 18 December.

Some people move a dose so any nausea does not land on Christmas dinner. If your side effects are mild by now, this may not matter.

Travelling over Christmas

When a Christmas parcel arrives

Winter brings its own delivery risk: freezing. A parcel left on a doorstep overnight in a cold snap, or in an unheated porch, can drop below zero. A frozen pen must be thrown away. Choose signed delivery, be in on the day, and check the cooling packs and pens as soon as the parcel arrives.
